About Adam Tavin
A product designer and high-intensity competitor all my life, I’d designed products for years but also saw the limitations of “design for design’s sake.” As an entrepreneur, I knew there had to be a more strategic approach to product design, one that encompassed the entire product design lifecycle and that focused on the end result: a successful product.

I look at product design holistically. Everything from product conception to engineering and prototyping and from supply-chain management to marketing. I’m privileged to work with Fortune 500 companies and entrepreneurs and to participate every day in innovations in consumer electronics, the Internet of Things/wearables, medical devices, home and commercial appliances and much more. I’ve also worked with Apple, Cisco, Speck, Lunar and others, and am grateful to have been exposed to many of the best practices in the industry, which provided the fuel for developing many of my own.

What Product Designers Can Learn From Bodybuilders, Part 3 of 3
Written by Steve Mason
We looked at patent and technology research then concept development to find the Right Path for your product, our Phase 1. Now let’s continue our journey with the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th phases of product design: Design De-Risking, Manufacturing Done Right, and Marketing.
  •  Phase 2 – Design De-Risking
  • Bodybuilders plan their routines and schedules out well in advance, aiming to peak just in time for the competition. This means eliminating risks that could create an early or late peak. Timing is everything. When it comes to products, start off with a Product Requirement Document or PRD. Then perform a risk analysis to remove design risk early in the process so development (of product muscle, so to speak) goes smoothly.
  • In competition, the earlier your training is on the right path, the less time and energy you waste. Again, this is true in product design: the earlier risks are mitigated, the lower the costs to you and greater the upside.
  •  Phase 3 – Manufacturing Done Right
  • Bodybuilders can choose from different types of equipment to train on. Even a single gym often has machines from various manufacturers, which allow you to perform similar workouts but in different ways. But some of those have a lower risk of injury, last longer and produce better results quicker. Others may still meet the needs of the everyday person, but not those of the Bodybuilding professional. This is why Bodybuilders have their favorite gyms, the ones that take the time to pick the right equipment.
  • We take the same approach to manufacturing. There are plenty of manufacturers but often just a few who can produce a product that meets our demanding specifications. Our model melds the advantages of offshore manufacturing with American management. The result is the highest quality at Asian prices, delivered on schedule.
  • There is no need to worry about IP theft and poor quality manufacturing when the Rabbit Product Design model gives you the ability to work directly with us. We then apply our seasoned expertise to managing the manufacturing turn key.
  •  Phase 4 – Marketing: A Process, Not A Crash Course
  • There are no legal shortcuts in bodybuilding. No matter how good you are potentially, if you don’t train and eat right, you will not win competitions or even come close. You will be outworked, and you will lose the cumulative benefit of living the Bodybuilding lifestyle.
  • Marketing is the same. You can always launch a program at the last minute, put some press releases on the wire, throw a briefing paper together. But that is desperation, not marketing. Real marketing, strategic marketing with powerful execution, cannot wait.
  • When you launch your marketing 2 weeks before your product hits the shelves, you are already months too late and the momentum that would drive purchases from day one is lost forever. You may even lose shelf space and be out of the stores for good. This is why we strongly encourage marketing to start early in the process, so that by the time you launch, the word is already out. We have the resources to start your marketing program at the right time, not at the last time possible. Transforming Ideas Into Marketable Products means utilizing our resources to get your marketing efforts started at the right time.
Even if you’re not a Bodybuilder, you’re probably reading this because you’re a “Productbuilder.” The similarities are striking: train to win, design programs to win, commit and obsess about the right things, and never take your eye off the end goal, whether that is a Bodybuilding trophy or a product that sells millions of units. The competitive desire that has inspired Adam Tavin to Bodybuild is the same one we harness for our customers when we at Rabbit “Productbuild” – and it is that attitude that will help your very own product succeed in the middle of fierce competition.
